Learning in 2024

It’s 2024 and the pendulum of education keeps swinging.

Over the past couple weeks Guy Claxton and Alfie Kohn shared excellent articles delving into CLT and the reality that learning is not either/or.

Claxton says “In reality, the craft of teaching mostly involves a judicious and dynamic mixture of both explanation and exploration.”

Kohn notes “Most proponents of [inquiry learning] are in favor of structured guidance,” one group of researchers notes, but that guidance looks nothing like direct instruction; it “affords choice, hands-on and minds-on experiences, and rich student collaboration.”

In my opinion teaching through inquiry connects to the way humans learn. Let’s not ignore the what and where, but engaging our students in the how and why should be the cornerstone of future focussed learning. It’s 2024 and the future is here. Let’s find harmony with learning, embrace inquiry and ensure students have the tools and competencies for our ever evolving world.
