I’m not a seasoned surfer, but I’ve had the thrill of riding waves in a few places around the world. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that the secret to a great ride lies in keeping the momentum. It’s about staying in the flow, feeling the energy carry you forward, and riding it as far as you can.
This year, my #OneWord is Momentum—a continuation of the wave I caught in 2024 and am determined to carry into 2025. Momentum is about movement, progress, and purposeful energy, and here’s why it excites me.
Riding the Wave at Nishimachi
As I step into 2025 as Deputy Head of School at Nishimachi International School, I feel the incredible momentum of our school community. Together, we’re riding a wave of transformation and growth:
- Inquiry in Action: With the guidance of Kath Murdoch and Trevor MacKenzie, inquiry-based learning is taking deeper root in our classrooms, inspiring both teachers and students to delve into deeper questions, seek meaningful answers and engage in process driven learning.
- Consistent Communication: Tools like Toddle are bringing continuity and clarity to how we plan, teach, and share learning, strengthening connections across our community.
- Creativity and Joy: From vibrant Arts showcases to expanding opportunities in Athletics, we’re seeing our students thrive as they express themselves, collaborate, and grow in confidence.
- Future-Ready Learning: Nishimachi is setting the standard for holistic education, preparing students not just for what’s next, but for what’s possible.
The energy is palpable, and the best part? We’re just getting started.
Personal Momentum
Momentum isn’t just a professional theme for me—it’s personal. On the cusp of completing my doctorate, I’m reminded that progress doesn’t always follow a straight line. My first thesis lacked relevance, and continuing with it would have meant going through the motions instead of pursuing meaningful growth. So I stepped back, reassessed, and redirected my efforts toward something that truly inspires me: how schools can embrace and engage with generative AI in learning and work.
This shift has been energizing. AI’s rapid evolution and its potential for transforming education have sparked my curiosity and opened doors to new ideas. It’s a journey fueled by momentum, and I’m excited to see where it leads.
Gratitude and Excitement for 2025
On a personal level, Tokyo continues to amaze me. The opportunity to explore this incredible city and country for another year and a half is something we deeply cherish. It’s a privilege to live and learn in such a vibrant, dynamic place.
As I look ahead, I’m inspired by the momentum propelling us forward as a school and as individuals. The work we’re doing in inquiry, personalized learning, and community building is transformative. It’s about creating a sense of belonging, fostering innovation, and equipping our students to thrive in an ever-changing world.
Riding the Wave Together
Momentum isn’t just about speed—it’s about direction, purpose, and resilience. As we ride the waves of 2025, I invite you to consider: What momentum are you building? How will you sustain it and use it to shape what’s ahead?
For me, the wave is clear, and I’m all in. Here’s to a year of progress, connection, and keeping the momentum going. Let’s ride this wave together.
