The Power of Resilience

I didn’t get it. And I’m almost finished.

I didn’t get the job. I wish this was a confetti post, but it’s not.

In a year where my word is momentum, this moment feels like a pause. I was riding the wave, but it wasn’t meant to be. Posts like these, the “not getting the job” ones, are rare. But maybe they matter just as much. A reminder that life isn’t all highlight reels. Sometimes, you lose momentum. And that’s okay.

We talk a lot about authenticity in leadership. That means sharing the good and the disappointing.

On the other hand, today I handed in my doctoral thesis for evaluation. What a journey it’s been with four years of study, but a gap year in the middle when I stepped away disengaged from my topic and having lost momentum. Then, just as I returned, ChatGPT arrived and I rode my wave of interest in this emerging field toward my dissertation: “Engaging Artificial Intelligence in Schools Through Change Leadership.”

As this school year closes, I find myself holding two truths: I didn’t get it. And I’m almost finished.

Both remind me of the power of perseverance, resilience, reflection and showing up, even when the outcome isn’t certain.
