Today is UNESCO’s World Teachers’ Day, a day to celebrate our profession and to recognize the incredible impact educators have each and every day in their classrooms.
UNESCO reminds us that this day is not only about celebrating how teachers are transforming education, but also about reflecting on the support they need to share their talents fully, and reimagining the way forward for the profession globally.
As someone who came into education later in life, I have always appreciated the gift of teaching and leading in schools. Each day in an educator’s life is different. While the rhythm of the school year may feel familiar, every student brings something unique, whether it is a story, a question, an answer, or something completely unexpected. Students ensure that our days are always alive and always an adventure.
Teaching is not an easy job, but when everything comes together, it is pure gold. It is a complex profession where the harmony between the art and science of learning can feel elusive, yet great teachers never stop striving for it. As we embrace inquiry-based learning, make intentional use of AI, and strengthen connections through social-emotional learning, it is important to honor all educators who create relevant, meaningful, and powerful experiences for students. I have often thought back to COVID, when teachers showed remarkable resilience, shifting between online, in-person, and hybrid learning, using every tool available to keep learning alive. It was a powerful reminder of how essential teachers are to students and families worldwide.
Before becoming a school leader, I was a classroom teacher for 14 years. I often think back to a Mysteries Unit I taught as a Vice-Principal and the creativity and joy it sparked for both me and my students. Teaching is one of the most creative and fulfilling professions, and teachers possess a remarkable range of skills as they shape learning for the next generation.
There is no doubt in my mind that being an educator is one of the greatest and most rewarding professions in the world. To everyone who works in schools, from teachers to leaders to staff, and all who make our schools welcoming, safe, and inspiring places for students…
